Prior to reading the 2007 Pre-Season Report we would like to make you aware of a few items along with telling you about our best and worst picks for the year. Note that we are including picks that were updated in August 2007 in our Final Rankings update dated September 3 along with the Sleepers/Deep Sleepers column. There were quite a few player changes in August, many of which turned out to be gems.
One other thing we would like to make you aware of. Predicting is one of those most difficult things to do. We have a lot of experience with it and prove ourselves year after year. In 2006, we placed 2nd in the Fantasy Football Pro Forecast Expert Poll and 3rd in the Fantasy Football Index Experts poll. No expert has done as well as Fantasy Insights over the last two years. We are consistent and most of all, help you win your league!
Let's take a quick look at some of our best and worst picks.
Our Best Picks!
- As usual injuries play a big part in how a player is ranked at year end. We would love to be able to project injuries, but we don't have that power. The following players suffered injuries that had a major impact on their overall ranking: Marc Bulger, Donovan McNabb, Matt Leinart, Matt Schaub, Rex Grossman, Jake Delhomme, Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, Shaun Alexander, Reggie Bush, Rudi Johnson, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Deuce McAllister, Ahman Green, Cadillac Williams, Marvin Harrison, Steve Smith, Roy Williams, Javon Walker, Jeremy Shockey and Todd Heap.
- Tom Brady - We really liked Tom Brady this year, ranking him 4th overall. Brady had an incredible year that won't be duplicated for a long time.
- Matt Hasselbeck - We projected him to be #8 and he ended the season as the #8 rated quarterback.
- Ben Roethlisberger - Roethlisberger was listed as one of our top quarterback sleepers and boy did he deliver.
- Joseph Addai - We rally liked Addai going into the season and he ended at #4. We ranked him #5.
- Adrian Peterson - While we didn't rank him as high as he should have been, he was one of our top running back sleeper picks.
- Terrell Owens - You would think that Owens was a no-brainer but that is not the case. He has been considered a head case and while expectations were high, we were really high on him. We rated him #3 and he ended #2.
- Greg Jennings - Jennings was listed as one of our top sleeper picks and boy did he deliver.
- Brandon Marshall - Going into the season, we saw something in the young receiver. When Javon Walker was hurt, he took over and was one of the better receivers in the league the second half of the season. That is why we listed him as one of our top sleeper picks.
- Anquan Boldin - Many experts had both Fitzgerald and Boldin ranked in the top ten. Not us. We had Fitzgerald ranked where he ended up but dropped Boldin down to #16. He ended the year at #16.
- Marques Colston - Colston had a fine rookie year and expectations were high for him. We tempered our expectations ranking him #9. He ended the year at #9.
- Tony Gonzalez - Many gave up on Gonzalez after a couple years of mediocrity. We still saw something there and he performed up to expectations. We ranked him #3 and he ended #2.
- New England - The Patriots defense was ranked #2 and ended as the #1 defense. We knew they were going to be good and they delivered.
- San Diego - This was another team that we thought would perform well. We ranked them #4 and they ended #3.
Our Worst Picks!
- Brett Favre - Going into 2007, not much was expected from Favre. He surprised everyone and put up huge numbers.
- Randy Moss - Moss made us and other fantasy experts a believer. After the miserable performance in 2006 in Oakland, he turned it around and can now be considered one of the best ever.
- Travis Henry - Henry fooled us and every other expert. He had a big year in 2006, came to Denver where he should have put up big touchdown totals. That did not happen.
- Steve Smith - Smith was hurt badly when Jake Delhomme was hurt. After scoring 3 TD's in the first two games he was never able to do it with the four quarterbacks that started during the year.
- Donald Driver - This was the year that Driver turned into a possession receiver. Greg Jennings took over as the star and was the one scoring all the touchdowns.
- Derek Anderson/Braylon Edwards - Anderson was not even a starter at the beginning of the season and look what he did. Edwards turned into one of the top receivers in the league.
- Vernon Davis - The 49ers offense struggled all year making all of their players bad picks.
- Baltimore - Defenses are hard to pick but this one turned out bad. The Ravens were very good at the beginning of the year then injuries killed them.
