Fantasy Insights Off-Season Report – July 2009
The Fantasy Insights Off-Season Report is published the
beginning of each month from February through August. Each month the
information will be a little different depending on what is going on around the
league and how much information about a specific topic is available. July is
when the real training camps begin – no more of those wimpy mini-camps and
OTAs. Teams are getting ready for the pre-season and regular season, and
players, whether drafted, traded for or free agent signings are trying to make
teams. Also, free agency ends later this month.

PLAYER NEWS:
SF signed TE Brian Jennings to a contract extension through
the 2014 season.
After a year with the NYG then a year out of football, NE
brought back RB Patrick Pass – for about a week, then cut him.
Buffalo signed RB Justice Hairston.
WAS cut longtime role-playing WR James Thrash.
QB Trent Green, who was cut earlier this year by STL, retired.
Former CHI QB Rex Grossman signed with HOU.
ATL cut QB Michael Vick; but don’t feel bad for poor little
Michael – at least one team (SEA) is interested in him and he WILL be signed by
some team before opening day.
PHI QB Donovan McNabb restructured his contract to stay with
Philly for 2 more years – but believe me, this is his last 2 years in Philly.
ARZ TE Ben Patrick was suspended for 4 games by the NFL for
violating their substance abuse policy.
DEN signed WR Brandon Lloyd.
HOU re-signed TE Owen Daniels for another season.
DAL signed former PIT WR Willie Reid who was out of football
last year.
JAX cut QB Cleo Lemon.
CIN cut WR Mario Urrutia, but he was quickly picked-up by
NYJ. They also cut TE Matt Sherry.
GB signed star WR Greg Jennings to a 4-year contract extension.
Drunk driving murderer Donte’ Stallworth (WR, CLE) gets more
punishment from the NFL then he does the American justice system as he is
suspended indefinitely by the NFL while the courts gave him the ever popular
celebrity “punishment” – community service. Oh yeah, he also got like 3 weeks
in jail.
In another case of “America’s Legal System Sucks”, PIT WR
Santonio Holmes had his misdemeanor drug charges dropped, despite police
finding marijuana in his car when he was pulled over – after Holmes himself
alerted police to the drugs. But one of our morally and ethically challenged
defense lawyers argued the traffic stop violated Holmes’ rights because the
search warrant wasn't specific enough… and the Prosecutors agreed!
Not long after signing TE Martrez Milner, the Jets, like the
NYG earlier this off-season, cut him.
The short-lived DEN QB
battle is over with former CHI QB Kyle Orton beating out Chris Simms.
JAX trades WR Dennis
Northcutt to DET.
PLAYER INJURY UPDATES
CAR RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles) has been hobbled since
February with an Achilles tendon injury in his left foot. He missed mini-camps
and OTAs but will be ready for training camp.
OAK rookie WR Darius Heyward-Bey (hamstring) should be back
for the start of training camp.
NE QB Tom Brady (knee) should be back for the start of
training camp.
CLE RB Jamaal Lewis (ankle) should be back for the start of
training camp.
BAL WR Demetrius Williams (Achilles) should be back for the
start of training camp, as will RB Willis McGahee (ankle) and Derrick Mason
(shoulder).
BUF WR James Hardy (knee) should be back for the start of training camp.
CHI RB Matt Forte (hamstring) is day-to-day.
DAL RB Felix Jones (calf) should be ready for the start of training camp, as
will WRs Miles Austin, Sam Hurd and Patrick Crayton and K Nick Folk.
IND RBs Mike Hart (knee) and Joseph Addai (knee) and K Adam
Vinatieri (hip) should all be back for the start of training camp.
DEN WR Brandon Marshall (hip) and RB Ryan Torain (knee)
should both be back for the start of training camp.
NO WR Marques Colston (knee) and TE Dan Campbell (knee)
should both be back for the start of training camp, but WR Lance Moore
(shoulder) is likely out until early September.
NYG WRs David Tyree (knee) and Sinorice Moss (hamstring)
should both be back for the start of training camp, while rookie WR Ramses
Barden (hamstring) is day-to-day.
PHI RB Bryan Westbrook (ankle) is likely out until the start
of the regular season.
SF WRs Michael Crabtree (foot) and Arnaz Battle (foot)
should both be back for the start of training camp.
SEA WRs Nate Burleson (knee), Deion Branch (knee) and Courtney Taylor (groin)
should all be back for the start of training camp.
LEAGUE NEWS:
After indefinitely suspending WR Donte’ Stallworth without
pay, Commissioner Goodell sent a letter to team executives directing them to
warn all employees of the consequences of substance related crimes. I wonder
if Stallworth will be able to pay that financial settlement he agreed to with
the victim’s family now that he has no pay coming in.
Speaking of Mr. Goodell…he’s keeping very busy this
off-season deciding the fates of Michael “Woof Woof” Vick and Plaxico “Bang!”
Burress.
The New Orleans Saints and the state of Louisiana agreed on
terms to keep the Saints in New Orleans through the 2025 season.
Former CLE WR Joe Jurevicius is suing the team and team
doctors over the staph infection he received while a member of the team.
DRAFT NEWS:
Arizona has yet to sign RB Chris Wells, but they have signed
RB LaRod Stephens.
Baltimore signed TE Davon Drew and RB Cedric Peerman.
Buffalo, Cleveland, Dallas, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New
Orleans, Oakland and St. Louis have yet to sign a draft pick.
CAR signed RBs Tony Fiammetta and Mike Goodson.
Chicago was the first team to sign all their draft picks
(9).
New York Jets were the second team to sign all their draft
picks (3).
New York Giants signed QB Rhett Bomar, WR Ramses Barden and
TE Travis Beckum.
Cincinnati signed WR Freddie Brown and RB Bernard Scott.
